Introduction
Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH), founded in 1958, is a hospital under the National Health Commission and a comprehensive Grade A tertiary hospital integrating medical services, education, research, preventive care, rehabilitation, and health management. For many years, PUTH has consistently ranked among the top in Beijing in terms of medical service volume and efficiency, with over 2,700 beds. In 2025, it served more than 5.9 million outpatient and emergency visits, 198,000 inpatient admissions, and performed 117,000 surgeries, with an average length of stay of 4.16 days, a leading level nationwide. In March 2022, PUTH was selected as one of 14 pilot hospitals for high-quality development of public hospitals in China. In the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals, PUTH achieved A++ ratings from 2018 to 2024. As a comprehensive Grade A tertiary hospital with distinctive multidisciplinary strengths, PUTH's spine surgery is the top discipline in China; its reproductive medicine center offers the most comprehensive treatments and is one of the largest centers internationally, where the first test-tube baby in mainland China was born; the Institute of Sports Medicine is the earliest established in New China and the only designated center for athlete injury prevention and treatment by the Chinese Olympic Committee; ophthalmology ranks among the top in China in corneal diseases, orbital diseases, fundus diseases, and cataract treatment; gastroenterology is at the forefront in ulcer pathogenesis research and treatment, and early gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment; cardiovascular medicine excels in coronary intervention, cardiac rehabilitation, and coordinated development of clinical and basic cardiovascular research; plastic surgery and occupational medicine are among the first clinical specialty disciplines established in China. Currently, the hospital has 27 (37 batches) National Clinical Key Specialties (including construction projects): Orthopedics (approved three times), Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy), Pathology, Specialty Nursing, Laboratory Medicine, Gastroenterology (approved three times), Obstetrics and Gynecology (including separate approvals for Gynecology and Obstetrics, totaling four times), Occupational Medicine, Otolaryngology, Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Molecular Biology and Regulatory Peptides, Respiratory Medicine (approved twice), Neurology (approved twice), General Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology (approved twice), Rehabilitation Medicine (approved twice), Plastic Surgery (Cosmetic Surgery), Sports Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Radiation Oncology (Radiotherapy), Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, Reproductive Medicine, Hematology. Multiple clinical and technical departments such as Laboratory Medicine, Medical Imaging, Critical Care Medicine, Clinical Epidemiology Research Center (Epidemiology), Infectious Diseases, Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology, Reproductive Medicine, and Neurosurgery have been approved as Beijing Clinical Key Specialties (including construction projects).
