Introduction

Yunnan Cancer Hospital was established in 1984. In 2021, it was approved as a National Cancer Regional Medical Center project. In June 2024, the Yunnan Hospital of Peking University Cancer Hospital (National Cancer Regional Medical Center) was inaugurated at the hospital. The hospital is a Grade III Level A cancer specialty hospital in Yunnan Province, integrating medical services, education, research, and prevention. It undertakes tasks in cancer prevention and treatment research, talent training, and academic exchanges in oncology. It houses 12 major medical centers, including the Yunnan Cancer Center and the Yunnan Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Quality Control Center. It is a National Health Commission cancer early detection and treatment base, a Yunnan Provincial cancer continuing education base, a Yunnan Provincial international cooperation demonstration base for lung cancer, and a national drug clinical trial (oncology) institution. The main campus covers an area of 79 mu (approx. 5.27 hectares) with a total building area of 246,000 square meters. It has 31 clinical departments, 12 medical technology departments, and 1,498 approved beds. The under-construction Cancer Center project is located north of the main campus, covering 24 mu (approx. 1.6 hectares), with a planned investment of 1.85 billion RMB and 693 beds, expected to be operational in 2026. The under-construction Free Trade Zone campus is located in the Economic Development Zone, covering a total area of 119 mu (approx. 7.93 hectares) with 600 beds, expected to be operational in 2025. Phase I covers 69 mu (approx. 4.6 hectares) with a total building area of 135,000 square meters, while Phase II reserves 50 mu (approx. 3.33 hectares) for the future construction of a proton and heavy ion center. The hospital is equipped with internationally advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment such as the da Vinci surgical robot, intraoperative radiotherapy, CyberKnife, PET-MR, and PET-CT. Its cancer diagnosis and treatment technology is at the leading level in Yunnan Province. The hospital currently has 2,882 employees, including 194 with doctoral degrees, 784 with master's degrees, and 415 with senior professional titles. Among them are 1 Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 1 National Outstanding Youth Science Fund recipient, 2 leading talents of the Organization Department's Ten Thousand Talents Plan, 2 National Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project recipients, 7 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, and 2 National Outstanding Science and Technology Workers. There are 89 individual and 10 team projects under the "Xingdian Talent Support Plan"; 24 recipients of provincial-level special allowances; and 33 young and middle-aged academic and technical leaders, reserve talents, and technological innovation talents in Yunnan Province. In recent years, medical services have grown rapidly, with various indicators maintaining a positive trend. In 2024, total outpatient and emergency visits exceeded 1 million for the first time, a year-on-year increase of 18.26%. Surgical procedures reached 32,700, a year-on-year increase of 0.93%, with surgeries accounting for 34.41% of total visits, up 3.09% year-on-year. Grade IV surgeries accounted for 50.93% of all surgeries, up 2.04% year-on-year. The CMI value was 1.2996. The proportion of patients from outside Kunming was 81.57%, a significant increase from the previous year. The hospital ranks first in the province in surgical volumes for lung, breast, colorectal, and gastric malignancies. The hospital has established a specialized system for cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment with advanced diagnostic technology and comprehensive treatment methods. Three specialties—oncology, thoracic surgery, and gastrointestinal surgery—have been approved as national key clinical specialties, and 17 specialties, including breast surgery, gynecology (gynecologic oncology), and radiation oncology, have been approved as provincial key clinical specialties. It has been approved as a pilot construction project for the clinical collaboration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine for major difficult diseases in Yunnan Province (lung cancer) and as a pilot unit for standardized diagnosis and treatment quality control for 12 national single-disease categories, including lung cancer and liver cancer. The Molecular Diagnosis Center and the Medical Laboratory have passed the review and assessment of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) and possess the qualification for stem cell clinical research filing institutions. In 2018, the hospital established the only internet hospital based on a physical hospital in Yunnan Province—Yunnan Cancer Hospital Internet Hospital—actively exploring new models of internet-based diagnosis and treatment services to help more patients overcome difficulties in accessing medical care. As a member of the National Cancer Specialty Alliance and the chairman unit of the Yunnan Cancer Specialty Alliance, the alliance now includes 171 units. It has also established remote medical service collaboration relationships with multiple tertiary hospitals and county-level hospitals. In 2024, it joined the "China Oncology Clinical Research Medical Ethics Review Mutual Recognition Consortium" as one of the 20 founding members. The hospital has 8 key laboratories, 10 provincial innovation teams, 10 research centers, 4 academician workstations, and 10 expert workstations. It is the postdoctoral research workstation of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University. Over the past five years, a total of 792 research projects have been approved, more than 900 high-level papers have been published in journals such as SCI and Peking University core journals, and 14 invention patents have been obtained. In the past five years, a total of 20 scientific research awards have been received, including 7 provincial science and technology progress awards and 13 departmental-level awards. As a directly affiliated hospital of Kunming Medical University, it has 12 teaching and research offices, 41 doctoral supervisors, and 237 master's supervisors. Utilizing the "complementary teaching alliance between specialized hospitals and general hospitals" model, it provides "through-type" training for clinical medicine students. It is a national first-class undergraduate clinical medicine program construction site and a national standardized residency training base with two specialties: radiation oncology and clinical pathology. It has formed a talent training system covering undergraduate, master's, doctoral, post-graduation education, continuing medical education, and international student training. As a national regional medical center construction project unit, the hospital actively serves and integrates into the national development strategy, actively expanding external exchanges and service capabilities. Over 80% of its patients come from outside Kunming and from other countries, with a large number of patients from neighboring provinces and autonomous regions such as Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Tibet. In 2025, as one of the first batch of Yunnan Provincial International Medical Service Pilot Hospitals, the hospital established an International Diagnosis and Treatment Department, attracting a large number of patients from countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos. As a pilot hospital for modern hospital management systems, the hospital continuously advances the modernization of its governance system and governance capabilities, significantly improving its comprehensive strength, core competitiveness, and informatization level. It has passed the National Health Commission's Smart Management Level 2 evaluation, Electronic Medical Record System Function Application Level 6, Interoperability Standardization Maturity Level 4A, and Smart Service Level 3 assessment. It has successively received honors such as National Advanced Collective in Cancer Prevention and Treatment, National People's Trusted Demonstration Hospital, National People's Trusted Top 100 Demonstration Hospital, National Humanistic Caring Hospital, National Outstanding Provincial Quality Control Center, National Advanced Collective in COVID-19 Prevention and Control in the Health System, National Women's Civilization Post, and Yunnan Provincial Health Advanced Collective. In the future, the hospital will adhere to the tenet of "patient-centered, wholeheartedly serving cancer patients," follow the motto of "benevolence in heart, diligence in work, excellence in skill," and strive to build a high-level cancer medical highland that is first-class in western China, nationally leading, and radiating to South and Southeast Asia.
